Many of you have asked me for specific crib mattress recommendations so I decided to create a post around this topic. I think a crib mattress is a really important purchase and you should definitely do some research on the options. A lot of things in a nursery are just to look beautiful or cute, but a mattress provides a safe, supportive, and comfortable sleeping area for your baby. Crib mattresses are all about function, not style! In this article, I will discuss several of the best rated crib mattresses so you can make the choice that’s right for you!

Here’s a sneak peak of the mattresses I’ll be discussing today:

Similarities and Differences Among Mattresses

Baby mattresses have a few things in common. These are pretty standard features that you’ll find in nearly all new crib mattresses.

  • Firm or extra firm
  • Waterproof or water-resistant
  • Standard crib size (27″W x 52″L)
  • GREENGUARD Gold certification (lower harmful emissions)

So when you’re evaluating a mattress, you are looking at the other “optional” features. Some of these include:

  • Cost
  • Organic
  • Reversible (some mattresses have a firm side for babies, and softer side for toddlers)
  • Washable cover
  • Thickness

As we take a look at my recommendations, I’ll be sure to provide this info for you to consider. I’ve chosen a budget mattress, an organic mattress, and a foam mattress that are all great buys.

Best Budget Mattress

My favorite budget mattress is the Safety 1st Baby and Toddler Mattress.

I love that this mattress can be turned over to the softer side to be more comfortable for toddlers. Extended use is definitely good for the budget! It has all the basic features, and the price is definitely right.

Consider purchasing an organic washable cover for this mattress to up the safety and convenience factor.

Pro Tip: Invest in an EXTR fitted sheet and waterproof cover. Make the bed with a sheet, then the waterproof cover, then another sheet. If there happens to be an accident in the middle of the night, you can take off the sheet and cover, and the bed is made and ready. No changing sheets in the middle of the night!

Best Organic Mattress

My favorite budget mattress is the Naturepedic Classic Organic Baby Crib Mattress.

You will notice that the organic feature jumps the price WAY up. But more and more data shows that the fumes from pesticides, flame retardants, and other chemicals can be harmful to baby. This is the one place in the nursery where I feel the extra expense is worth it. If your budget allows for this type of mattress, it’s a must-have.

This mattress has a lifetime guarantee, a generous return policy, and very high customer reviews.

Best Foam Mattress

My favorite foam mattress is the Graco Premium Foam Crib and Toddler Mattress in a Box (Amazon).

This mattress is also super budget-friendly, and has the added benefit of shipping in a small, lightweight box. You open the box and unroll the mattress – it will automatically expand to its full size. Make sure to give it at least 2 weeks before use to fully expand.

It has excellent reviews, a great price, and I love the washable outer cover.

Sleep Tight

I would feel good about my baby sleeping on any of these mattresses, but I suggest you opt for organic if you can. If that’s not possible, consider using an organic mattress cover and organic sheets. The less junk we expose baby to, the better.

And as always, my first choice is to borrow or buy pre-owned! It’s better for the budget and better for the environment.

I hope you enjoy many, many moments of gazing at a peacefully sleeping baby.

Mattresses are so important to help babies get great sleep, I would know that as we had trouble when the little one was little. The first mattress had my child waking up every 30 minutes – 1 hour, which wasn’t ideal. It was because we were on a budget. However, as soon as we invested in a better mattress it dramatically helped my kid to sleep better and for longer.

I think the three options all sound perfect and it’s clear you have done careful research to bring mattresses which will benefit any parent out there with babies.

    Thanks for sharing this Katie,

Oh my, waking up every hour or less is so hard on everyone! Choosing a great mattress can definitely help. I think the foam ones are more comfortable than the coiled springs, but you do still have to make sure it is firm enough to keep baby safe.

Hi! I can’t help smiling with satisfaction when I kiss my baby goodnight and shortly after I’ve said “sleep tight, don’t let the bugs bite”, I see her sound asleep. But I know it’s not because of a charm in those words. To see our babies fast a sleep, lot’s of things must be attended. And I know that one that I need to attend as soon as possible is providing her with a good mattress. I’m a fan of organic mattresses, so my choice is obvious. Thanks for this post!

Hi, Ann! You are so right – that is the best feeling when your little sweet pea is snoozing peacefully. A great mattress definitely helps, and organic is always a great choice. Thank you for your comment and best wishes to you and your family!

Wow, Katie! I never knew there was such a variety in mattresses for babies! Idk why I never placed much thought into the overall comfortability of a baby (probably because I don’t have any kids yet) So you have really opened my eyes.

I would think getting a waterproof mattress for a crib would be cost-efficient (to prevent little accidents). Are there any organic waterproof mattresses available? or existing?

    • Katie

Hi Tyranique! Thank you for your comment and question!

Yes, the Naturepedic Organic mattress that I recommended is waterproof. It can easily be wiped down which definitely comes in handy. One of my favorite “pro tips” for nighttime leaks is to double up on pads/sheets…so you’d have your waterproof mattress -> sheet -> waterproof mattress cover -> sheet. That way, if there is a eak i the middle of the night, you can strip off the wet sheet and waterproof cover and the bed is ready to use again and you can go back to sleep. No changing sheets in the middle of the night.

Thanks for stopping by! Best wishes!
